Maharashtra state sets Rs.50 Cr budget to get eggs in Midday Meal scheme

The Maharashtra government has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore to introduce eggs into the mid-day meal scheme for government-run schools. This initiative aims to provide protein-rich food to students, ensuring better nutrition. The eggs will be served once a week for 23 weeks, either boiled or as egg pulao. Students who do not consume eggs can opt for bananas or local fruits instead.

However, this decision has faced opposition from several religious and cultural groups. Organizations associated with the BJP, Shiv Sena, and other spiritual groups argue that the inclusion of eggs violates religious tenets and may influence vegetarian children to consume non-vegetarian food. They propose alternative sources of protein, such as milk or dry fruits, citing concerns about the quality and health risks associated with eggs.

Despite the opposition, some leaders, including former education minister Vasant Purke, support the initiative, emphasizing the nutritional benefits for children from low-income families.
